About Bluebell Wood

On 19th September 2008 Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice opened its doors to the first children for respite, emergency and end of life care.  A phased opening of the complete facilities will follow in the subsequent months until all 8 beds are open.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is establishing an excellent reputation, and for over 2 years has been working with children with life limiting and life threatening conditions in their own homes.

Currently more than 80 children and their families are being helped through planned monthly support.  Regular help at home allows them to spend this time as they wish: taking the siblings out for a treat; going to a parents evening; playing with their ill child whilst the carers play with the siblings; plus many more opportunities.

In addition the planned periods of respite stay now being offered at the hospice will allow some families their first chance of a complete nights sleep in years.  During the day the children can enjoy the spa facilities, the messy play area, the multi sensory equipment and many more fun and stimulating activities.  The whole family have their meals cooked for them, and can enjoy quality time together.

Once fully open, up to 200 children will receive support from Bluebell Wood each year through regular care in their own homes, planned periods of respite care in the hospice, end of life care and bereavement support.  Children will come form across South Yorkshire, East Derbyshire and the North Midlands.

It will cost £2.5 million every year to offer this complete package of support, and with no statutory government funding, it is only thanks to the general public that we will be able to offer this service.
